A circled, script "P" proofmark is stamped behind the trigger guard. The left stock wrist is stamped with the block initials "J.S.A." in a rectangle (this late style inspection mark indicates that the carbine was probably upgraded at Springfield Armory after 1906). The absolute way to tell is if the action is stamped Model 1898, the barrel is exactly 22 long and the front sight base is the authentic Krag base, brazed into. The left side of the receiver is marked: "U.S./MODEL 1898./ SPRINGFIELD ARMORY./126370" in two lines. This carbine has the standard arsenal up-grades: (1) replacement M1899 pattern stock with longer forearm and no provision for sling bar, (2) Model 1902 Carbine tangent rear sight and (3) Model 1998 Rifle pattern handguard without sight protector hump. I have located a Rock Island Armory reproduction sling fitting the model and year. Rifles and Carbines Models 1892 to 1899: Covering numbers: 1 - 484000. It has been been stored with the rifle in a protective bag. The leather sling has finally after over 118 years of use become serviceable. I have since located a good condition bayonet and scabbard appropriate to the year and model. My father a Korean War Combat Veteran worked the original bayonet down to a dagger and then disposed of it, saying he did not want to be near it.
